Why Northwood Writer?

Once upon a time, the cool thing to do after school was to talk to your friends on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). At least, this was the case when I was in high school.

On AIM, one would choose a screen name that often had nothing to do with one's name. I had a lot of screen names back in the day, but one that stood out was NorthwoodsWriter - a representation of my love of what I called the "deep woods" in Northern Michigan and my love for writing.

That's evolved to where there is a major fictional city in my shared universe of stories called Northwood, located at the tip of Michigan's thumb (though in previous iterations it's been located near Tawas City, Muskegon, and the Upper Peninsula). The city of Northwood is such a significant setting for my stories that it's almost a character itself - much like Gotham City is almost a character in Batman stories (other than that though, there aren't too many similarities between Northwood and Gotham).

So Northwood Writer remains as a kind of screen name or pen name for me, and I thought it would be a fitting title for this blog.
